City of Hope Steam Line
Contract Amount:
$1,220,000
Start / Completion Date:
April 2023 / October 2023
Nestled to the east of the iconic Amini Building and the Pavilion, the City of Hope National Medical Center embarked on an ambitious project to enhance the infrastructure along Circle Road. This initiative involved a meticulous widening of the roadway, extending an impressive 660 feet from curb to curb. Collaborating closely with Tricor, Pac Rim took the helm of an intricate steam, condensate, and chilled water line replacement, utilizing an innovative design-assist plus design-build approach alongside the expert teams from IMEG and tk1sc.
The project unfolded in a high stakes setting, where work continued around the clock in confined spaces. Pac Rim’s skilled team undertook the daunting task of isolating existing steam and condensate lines nestled within manholes, deftly disconnecting and removing northbound and eastbound piping. Their efforts included securing thrust blocks at the northeast turn and anchoring expansion joints, all while maintaining rigorous pressure testing at each phase to ensure the integrity of both the inner carrier and outer containment piping.
Further along East Circle Road, Pac Rim expanded the project scope by adding an impressive length of steam and condensate piping. This encompassed trench extensions into the East Landscape, the installation of essential expansion joints, steam traps, and pipe insulation. Core drilling and concrete patching at original pipe penetrations rounded out this comprehensive upgrade.
Additionally, to accommodate the new DOC Building’s drive-thru entry elevation, essential adjustments were made to the existing manhole and associated isolation valves. Our efforts included the strategic integration of new chilled water line stops and the removal of outdated chilled water piping and manhole. In their place, we installed an impressive 40 feet of fresh chilled water piping, a significant upgrade that enhances the sustainability of the City of Hope’s vital infrastructure.
